US LNG exports are set to increase after the U.S. Department of Energy approved additional volumes from the Elba Island terminal, reinforcing global supply at a time of market disruption (April 2, 2026)

The U.S. Department of Energy has authorized a 22% increase in LNG export volumes from the Elba Island terminal in Georgia, allowing operator Southern LNG Company (a subsidiary of Kinder Morgan) to export an additional 28.25 Bcf/year to non-free trade agreement countries.

The terminal was previously authorized to export up to 130 Bcf/year and has been operational since 2019. The newly approved volumes are expected to be available for immediate export.

The move comes as global energy markets face heightened disruption, particularly across key maritime routes in the Middle East. U.S. authorities framed the decision as part of broader efforts to maintain reliable supply to global markets during periods of volatility.

According to the Department of Energy, the United States remains positioned as a key LNG supplier, with export capacity continuing to expand. Recent approvals and final investment decisions suggest U.S. LNG exports could more than double by the early 2030s.
